Over the weekend I took part in a First Aid for Mental Health training run by Andy at Qawah.co.uk
As soon as I heard about this training I immediately knew it was something I wanted to do and felt that it was equally important as regular First Aid. Mental Health has become a hot topic and it seems that everywhere you look it is being discussed and awareness being brought to the subject, which is a huge step towards destigmatising MH.
A few things came up for me as I was going through this training that I’d like to share with you.
Firstly, I had an overwhelming sense of annoyance and frustration that we have evolved as a society to the point where our collective mental wellness is so damn delicate – there is something fundamentally wrong with the way we are doing things that is causing us to require people who are trained in FAMH (I already knew this but it really boiled up to the surface this weekend).
Secondly, I realised how much I could relate to what are referred to as the big 6. And that caused me to wobble for a minute.
I realised why I was wobbling and I was able to stabilise myself quite quickly. I have spent years and years learning techniques and tools to ground myself and not go to dark places, which I am hugely grateful for.
Another thing that got my goat was the idea that once diagnosed with something like depression or anxiety, many people seem to believe that they are stuck with it for life. I felt that to be incredibly disempowering, especially as my experience has been something different. Despite many years of what would be referred to as ‘clinical depression’ i.e. with a formal diagnosis, I eventually realised that I had the power to make the choice that I was not going to let that be a permanent part of me, so put it down and moved on. It goes without saying that there is a lot more detail behind that journey.
Don’t get me wrong, occasional thoughts will pop into my mind that could easily take me on a scary journey, but I now know how not to follow them or let them develop and take control of me and I truly believe that we all have that power within us.
